The biggest blanket in Steyning

15th Feb 2016
The biggest blanket in Steyning
Service users at the Dingemans Centre & Cafe, Steyning, have spent the last five months knitting a large blanket which is being donated to The Salvation Army. The project began back in September with Gill and Christine, two volunteers at Dingemans, taking the lead and encouraging people to knit over coffee and during afternoon talks. Over the course of five months the quantities of squares grew and grew and there have been many attempts at finding the perfect design. In fact the blanket is not quite finished yet, as there is still a row of squares to add. One volunteer has been working tirelessly, sewing them together at home. The Dingemans Centre & Cafe is open three days a week, offering minibus trips and group activities to people aged 55 and above. For those who just fancy popping in for coffee or a home cooked lunch the cafe is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday. For more information call 01903...

Supported accommodation for mothers and their babies

11th Dec 2015
Supported accommodation for mothers and their babies
Stopover 4 and 5, which offer supported accommodation to pregnant young women in Brighton, are now officially open thanks to volunteers from St Peter’s Church and donations from Brewers Paints and IB Flooring. The new houses, which offer quality accommodation to pregnant young women prior to the birth of their baby to stop the need to present as ‘homeless’ following the birth of their child. The houses also ensure that young women are placed in a safe and supportive environment with other young mothers and babies and not with the wider homeless population, which might cause extra stress and uncertainty at a time when a stable and supportive environment is so critical for the development of both mother and baby. Stopover 4 and 5 have dedicated staff on-site, with each of the women allocated an individual key worker. Key worker’s help individuals to access permanent accommodation and liaise with external agencies, as well as supporting them with developing the knowledge and skills they need to live independently. Award for healthy food @ The Larches

4th Dec 2015
Award for healthy food @ The Larches
The Larches Café in Coldean has been awarded a ‘Healthy Choice’ award, as part of a joint initiative between Brighton & Hove City Council and Brighton & Hove Food Partnership. The award is recognition of the efforts that the café has made to prepare, cook and serve food in a healthier way. Steps towards a healthier café include adjusting the positioning of fruit on display, in order to make it more accessible to the customer and making fruit the same price as a snack bar to make it more appealing to buy. Other changes include offering low-fat spreads on sandwiches, and salad dressings with fewer calories. Andrew Barnett, Café Manager, said: “We are continuing to serve home-made pastries, sandwiches and light lunches but ensuring that they are served with fresh salad and vegetables, cooked in as little oil as possible. Our cakes are also healthier because they are fruit based and low in...

Were you a teenager between 1940-1960? Share your memories over a free coffee

26th Nov 2015
Were you a teenager between 1940-1960? Share your memories over a free coffee
Are you aged 60+? Do you have a story to tell about being young and ‘giddy’ in Brighton? Giddy, the Brighton oral history project, is looking for participants to share their memories of being a teenager in Brighton during the 1940s, 50s & 60s. Come along to The Hop50+ on 16th December, 10am – 2pm and share your stories. Stories could be about love & romance, fashion & identity, hobbies & pastimes, music & dancing, or the beach & seafront. Did you dance at The Regent, Sherry’s or other dance halls in the 1940s? What happened at the ice rink in the 1950s? Were you a mod or rocker in the ’60’s? What did you get up to? What did you do and where did you go as an LGBT person between the 1940s and ’60’s? We’d love to hear about your leisure time, falling in love, heartbreak and those lasting memories of life in Brighton as a teenager between 1940’s and ’60’s. Preserve your precious memories for future generations by taking part in a free memory day event, where you will be interviewed by teenage students from Longhill High School to help create a free exhibition, website and interactive app for mobile phones launching in May 2016. We’d also love to see and collect your images of youth, photographs of your teenage years, especially those relating to the memories you’d like to share. Please bring them along with you to show us. There will be free refreshments in the café, and the students will welcome you and introduce you to the project while you wait for your interview. As final touches were still being put to the newly refurbished building, staff took time out from their training to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the many community volunteers who have made the Haven possible. Five weeks of intensive work have transformed the 1970’s building into a fresh, modern centre. Local builder Nigel Parsons and his team carried out the internal alterations and were central to the success of the project. The Workshop Group of Henfield Theatre Company led the redecoration while members of the Henfield Garden Club landscaped the front garden. Artwork on display around the building has been kindly loaned by Lyn Bedford-White. For further information, please call the Haven...

We’ve re-branded!

30th Oct 2015
We’ve re-branded!
Impact Initiatives has got a new look, thanks to Brighton design agency Osomi. Our new branding, which is much bolder in colour and design was decided upon by a working group of people who use our services, trustees and staff. Most noticeable is the new colour pallet and a logo for each service, reflecting the overall look of the charity. Caroline Ridley, Chief Executive, said: “We hope that our updated branding better reflects the work we do and makes the organisation easier to understand. With our services continuing to grow we wanted to make it clear that our services are very unique in what they offer but that they are still part of the same organisation.“ Along with a new look, there is also a new name for St John’s Centre and Café in Hove, also previously known as BOPP. Centre members, volunteers and staff spent time discussing ideas and decided on ‘The Hop 50+’ after it was agreed that “the name should capture a sense being active and living life to the full’, said The Hop50+ Manager, Lin Hastings. She added: “Our name might have changed but we are offering the same and more – a range of daily activities and interests groups, weekly trips, a café offering healthy and delicious meals, health information, and a wellbeing room where people can book a number of treatments such a chiropody and seated massage.”  ...
